PROTESTS AT US EMBASSY, TUNIS
Many demonstrators had converged on the US embassy for a non-violent protest, often coming by foot from nearby suburbs. They found that Tunisan riot police were already using large quantities of teargas against more militant protestors — who had torched US embassy vehicles inside the compound, resulting in billowing black smoke. For the rest of the afternoon the would-be demonstrators lined three bridges across the nearby highway, watching events unfold.
