During the Tunisian revolution in 2011, the army refused to open fire on members of the public, helping to ensure the success of the revolution within a relatively short timeframe.
The town’s cultural centre has little going on right now, and no budget for events. With as many as one in three school or college-leavers unemployed, the town continues to experience tensions, despite the 605 new jobs recently announced at the state-owned phosphate works.
